Exhaust Systems? Mufflers? What Do They Actually Do?

You may know that your vehicle's exhaust system is important to keep it running smoothly, but do you know what it actually does? The exhaust system is actually a series of systems, which function in tandem to clean up harmful emissions, reduce engine noise, and, of course, keep gases from building up in your engine block. So, obviously, it's vital to keep a well-maintained exhaust system.

The exhaust system accomplishes all of this by first pushing the engine emissions through oxygen sensors, then into the catalytic converter, where it's broken down to reduce harmful emissions, and then to the muffler to reduce noise, before finally being expelled from the vehicle into the atmosphere. Any of these systems are subject to failure, which can affect the performance of the system as a whole, and, consequently, your vehicle.
